About Gail Abelow, massage therapist

Dear Friends,
I feel honored to provide compassionate, effective massage therapy to support your health and well-being.

Personal Message

The world might be a more peaceful place if everyone scheduled a regular massage.  Mentally, massage allows you to quiet your thoughts.  Physically, massage relaxes muscles you didn't even know were tight and keeps your muscles mobile.  Emotionally, massage gives you a deep, centered feeling.  You can feel in touch with your inner core.  Massage gives you a baseline for what relaxation really feels like.

Philosophy

My goal is to apply massage with sensitivity for the comfort of each person.   Massage should not hurt to be effective.  In fact, too much pressure applied during a massage can cause a guarding reaction in the muscles.  I can work with you to find the right type of massage for your needs.

Massage for painful muscles is applied with respect for your pressure tolerance.   Some people do better with a light massage to calm down pain or spasm, some with a deep but comfortable massage to work out the knots.  We will find the right balance together.   I do not provide any type of diagnosis of your condition.  Please see a medical doctor if you wish to receive a diagnosis of your condition.  If you have been in an accident or are in severe pain, please seek permission from your doctor's office before receiving massage.

Massage for relaxation can provide a nurturing and calming experience, or an invigorating experience depending on the pace of the massage and the amount of pressure used.  I use music and a variety of massage techniques to help you relax.  I am open to your feedback.  You can even bring your favorite music or relaxation tapes.  The pressure (deep or light) and pace (quick or slow) used during your massage depends on your mood for the day.

My Backgound

After being interested in holistic healing for many years, I decided to seek certification in massage therapy .  Before becoming a massage therapist, I worked in the corporate world as a technical writer and training designer. I sat in front of a computer for many hours a day!    I understand the aches and stresses of our modern lives and look forward to giving you an experience of enhanced balance and tension relief.

Certifications and Interests

-  board certified by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork

-  member of the Association of Bodywork and Massage Professionals

-  Licensed to practice massage and bodywork in North Carolina (license number 1860).

Above and beyond my massage certification, I have received extra training in back and neck massage, trigger points, cranial sacral, thailand style yoga massage, hot stone massage, and reiki.

I also have an ongoing interest in studying the mind-body connection, including how past and present emotions of stress, anger, grief, or sadness contribute to pain.

I encourage clients who have chronically sore muscles to consider strength training with weights combined with massage if you are sufficiently motivated to take advantage of this powerful combination of therapies.  Combining massage with physical therapy if you are healing from an injury can also speed your recovery from pain.  If you currently see a chiropractor, loosening up the muscles with massage may help you hold your adjustements better.

Some clients are able to use regular massage to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.
